Vietnam War

Their Story

Lyle Richard Peña was born on July 26, 1944, in Davenport, Iowa, to Eladio and Lenore (Olvera) Peña. Lyle went to Davenport Central High School and graduated in 1963. During high school, he played basketball and football. He went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy with the rank of Seaman E3 during the Vietnam War.

Unlike the other U.S. military services, which organize service members according to ranks, the Navy organizes its force according to rates, although it also follows the same pay-grade structures as the other services (E1 to E9). The specific duties performed by Seamen E3, include ship maintenance; equipment maintenance, repair, and underway operations; lookout and helmsman duties; serving as a member of damage control, emergency, and security alert teams; participating in naval ceremonies; and working with qualified personnel to gain job training and experience.

Lyle was united in marriage to Wendi Young on November 11, 1978, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They shared over 30 years of marriage together.

After completing his military service, he served on the Rock Island Arsenal Police Force. Lyle retired in March 2009 from the Rock Island Arsenal Police Department with the rank of Captain and 20 years of service. Lyle was also a member of the Rock Island Auxiliary Police, the Knights of Columbus #532, and St. Anthony Catholic Church. He was a fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. Lyle also had two “ladies”, cats he called Lucky and Lucy.

Lyle died on September 20, 2009, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf after a hard-fought battle with Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Lyle is one of four men from the Peña extended family, including Jesse, Alex, and Alvino, who served his country, and are buried at Rock Island National Cemetery.
